About the Brain Bee

The International Brain Bee (IBB) is a live Q & A competition that tests the neuroscience  knowledge of high school students. All students from grades 9 to 12 are invited to participate. Students  compete to determine who is the "best brain" on such topics as intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, addiction, Alzheimer's, and stroke. The IBB  is an attempt to motivate our youth to learn about the brain, capture their imagination and inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical brain research. We challenge students to compete!

In a three-step  process, local competitions are held throughout North America. Winners advance to the National Bee held during Brain Awareness Week in mid-March. Winners of the national championship advance to the International Championship, which will be held August 12 - 14 in San Diego CA as part of the annual American Psychological Association convention. A list of all local bees across the country can be found by clicking here.

About the Michigan Brain Bee

The fifth annual Michigan Brain Bee will be held on Saturday January 9, 2010, in the Bernath Auditorium of the David Adamany Library on the campus of Wayne State University.

The Bee is sponsored by the Michigan Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience and the Ralph Gerard Fund from the Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute (MBNI) of the University of Michigan. Ralph Gerard was a central figure in the creation of modern neuroscience; more information on his life and career can be found here, or by using the link at the top of the page. The support of these organizations will allow us to defray the travel costs of our bee winner to compete in the national bee.

The 2010 winner shall receive:

1. The honor of representing the Michigan Chapter in the National Brain Bee.

2. A minimum $500 in travel support to attend the national competition.

3. A set of Neurology Board review flash cards (Colen Flash-Review: Neurology; $189 value), courtesy of Colen Publishing. Excellent for helping you prepare for the national bee!

4. A neuroscience textbook, courtesy of Cengage Publishing, valued at over $100.
